Granny Keeps it Real / by Christina Osheim

Jazzercise references seem like they are here to stay. They have settled in, found their favorite chair, and are putting their feet up and asking for a glass of ice water. When is it not a good morning starting out with some Stevie Wonder singing to you. I mean, really? Who can resist that? I don't even care if it is a different artist with an amazing voice singing his song. I am still back at Talking Book and smiling and feeling that the day, rainy though it is, will be good. He's a favorite of mine as is BB King. (The BB King was from 10 years ago or so and I just remember feeling all bad ass lifting weights to him). Another favorite has been Lady Gaga's Born This Way. First of all that is a great song with a superb message, second I like the choreography of the song, and thirdly it makes me laugh inside, like rolling on the floor laughing, to think of us, a bunch of youngish to middle to elderly lady's trying to look like we're performing at the super bowl. Man, that one never gets old.

So now I'm back, half a crossword is done, I'm sipping coffee out of my current favorite mug that I am thinking of reinterpreting for Möbius. Ideally I want to make it into a travel mug, but I want to throw it and not cast it. I love the idea of this graphic on a travel mug. I would buy it, and if I do make them will claim the first second to come out of the kiln, knowing the full irony (god I hope i'm using that word correctly) of it! I've also thought that I could make a flask with a cork lid. Is there something really wrong for a recovering alcoholic to make and sell flasks? If it is, too bad, because I think those are on the docket.

Speaking of kilns and firings I named mine correctly. Granny she is and Granny she has proven to be. I wrote yesterdays blog and then ordered test blue glazes for the Faberge teacups, checked on a glaze order I had put in, called Swarovski to request free samples of crystals I could use for the Belle Grove teacups (it was the first time I called asking for a sample of goods as a business owner to create a product for a client... so so so surreal! and they're sending me crystals to test out!!! sweet!), finished my returns, went to the bank, cleaned up my messes. In all I felt like I had put my head to the tasks in front of me and worked. Sure I felt a little smug about getting crystal samples sent to me unquestioned, but who wouldn't?!? I was just being a hard working, head to the grindstone, worker bee.

Well...not as much as I should have been and Granny, being a good granny reminded me to keep my head out of the clouds.... With this firing I had reglazed a few pieces, or rather added a bit of glaze to an already glazed piece (random firing fact: once the clay has been glazed it typically has been fired to vitrification, i,e, it won't absorb water, and because of this and especially when it has already been glazed is that the glaze wants to run right off It has nothing to "grip." An easy trick to get the surface a bit tacky or sandpapery so the glaze will absorb and stick is to spray it with hairspray. Yes, that is right, hairspray. Get a cheap bottle of aquanet - which is still around $5 in DC, a price that seems ridiculously expensive - spray your piece and let hair spray dry and you are good to go. It works and does not change the chemical structure of the glaze! Sweet!!!) Anyway, I cracked the kiln, pulled out one of the reglazed pieces that was still a bit hot to see if the reglaze resolved the problem. It had sort of. Wasn't what I had expected, but could work. The texture of the already glazed part felt a bit funny and different though, Weird. Later I went to unload the rest and all of them felt off.

I fired to the wrong cone. Granny had given me a tsk tsk tsk to remind me that I am working with earth and need to keep my feet on said ground. Not a big deal, I put in the correct cone (gran's an old broad and uses older technology to gauge temperature, a method I actually prefer for the most part).

So today I really will get to throw, need to throw to get this assignment done on time, and fingers crossed swirl girl is swirly and fun and doesn't feel the need to turn into twisted sister to keep my hands in line.

Swirl girl may be twisted today as I didn't really clean her up the last time I used her... whoops

I also got new tennies.

And yesterday I really did mean to write Wednesday Morning instead of Tuesday Morning. Really, cross my heart... ;)
